Below are two acrylic paintings on matboard coated
with gesso. After many attempts to find a comfortable
method of working with acrylic paints I may have finally
found an approach that feels natural to me. I dislike the
behavior of acrylic over canvas--the semi-dry paint is
scraped from the raised weave too easily while the
work is in progress, and the vivid color is too bright
and flat compared to oil. In these pieces I obtained
a warmer, more subtle effect of color by building
up thin layers of glazing and scumbling over the
absorbant, slightly textured surface.
The images are fun cartoony stylizations created
especially for the Arts Prescott Co-op Gallery.
